Pezizales

An order in the class of Pezizomycetes. Nannfeldt (1949), following Le Gal (1946), recognized two families in Pezizales: Sarcoscyphaceae and Pezizaceae. Korf (1954) revised the classification of operculate discomycetes, which influenced successive family delimitations within this group. Later, Korf (1973) placed Pezizales and Tuberales in separate orders within the discomycetes. Gargas and Taylor (1995) identified Pezizales as a monophyletic group within the discomycetes based on a phylogenetic analysis of SSU rDNA sequence data.
