Gyromitra esculenta

Saprobic on soil. Sexual morph: Apothecia 3–10 cm diam., gregarious, stipitate, superficial on the substrate. Receptacle irregularly lobed, deeply wrinkled to convoluted. Disc blackish brown. Margins curved, concolorous to disc. Stipe yellowish. Ectal excipulum composed of cells of textura angularis. Medullary excipulum composed of hyaline, septate cells of textura intricata. Paraphyses 5–8 µm wide at the apex, filiform, numerous, septate, slightly enlarged at the apices. Asci 200–320 x 10–15 µm, 8-spored, unitunicate, operculate, cylindrical, rounded at the apex, non-amyloid. Ascospores 15–20 x 6–10 µm, 1–2-seriate, hyaline, ellipsoid, thick and smooth-walled, multi-guttulate. Asexual morph: Undetermined.

Notes: Gyromitra esculenta is characterized by its pitted apothecia with irregularly lobed cap and yellowish long stipe and thick-walled multi-guttulate ascospores (Beug et al. 2014).
