Helvellaceae

Helvellaceae Fr.
Facesoffungi number: FoF 04215
Helvellaceous taxa are epigeous or hypogeous, primarily in woodlands and grassy habitats and
probably most species form ectomycorrhizas (Abbott and Currah 1997). They are widespread especially in temperate, boreal and austral regions (Abbott and Currah 1997).

Ascomata are large apothecial or truffles. Apothecial forms are saddle-shaped. Asci are cylindrical, persistent, operculate, not blueing in iodine. Ascospores are hyaline or brown, smooth-walled, lacking appendages, tetranucleate (Clements and Shear 1954). Asexual morphs are not recorded (Cannon and Kirk 2007). Recent studies on Helvellaceae include Crous et al. (2014), Beug et al. (2014), Landeros et al. (2015), Ariyawansa et al. (2015) and Zhao et al. (2015, 2016). In this paper, we illustrate collections of Helvella pseudolacunosa, H. rugosa, H. pezizoides and Wynnella silvicola as representatives of the family.
