Saprobic on soil. Sexual morph: Apothecia 2–5 cm diam., gregarious, stipitate, superficial on the substrate. Receptacle saddle-shaped to loosely lobed and convoluted, blackish brown when dry, outer surface densely fuzzy. Stipe concolorous to receptacle, long. Ectal excipulum composed of thick walled, hyaline to brownish cells of textura globulosa. Medullary excipulum composed of cells of textura intricata. Paraphyses 2–4 µm wide at the apex, numerous, septate, filiform. Asci 70–150 x 15–20 µm, 8-spored, unitunicate, cylindrical, rounded at the apex, non-amyloid. Ascospores 10–15 x 6–10 µm, 1–2-seriate, hyaline, ellipsoid, thick-walled, with one large oil droplet. Asexual morph: Undetermined.

Notes: Helvella pezizoides is characterized by its saddle shaped loosely lobed apothecia with densely fuzzy outer surface (Saccardo 1889).
