Kallistoskypha incarnata

Kallistoskypha incarnata (Duvernoy and Maire) Pfister, Agnello, Lantieri and LoBuglio, Mycol. Progr. 12(4): 670 (2013)
Facesoffungi number: FoF 04221
Saprobic on soil. Sexual morph: Apothecia 15–16 mm diam., gregarious, substipitate, superficial on the substrate, coral pink to cherry red when immature and yellowishcream with pinkish spots at maturity. Receptacle deeply cupulate and compressed on one side, finely granulose. Disc concave, pinkish. Hairs 300 x 11–15 µm hyaline, septate, incrusted, cylindrical, with blunt apices. Stipe 3–4 mm long, firmly attached to soil with mycelial tufts. Ectal excipulum 90–120 µm thick, composed of cells of
textura globulosa to angularis, terminal cells are subglobose to club-shaped, thick-walled and covered with granular, gelatinous materials. Medullary excipulum composed of three layers, upper layer 20–40 µm composed of cells of textura globulosa to angularis, middle layer 80–40 µm composed of elongated, club-shaped, utriform cells, lower layer 35–70 µm composed of cells of textura intricata. Hymenium yellowish-cream. Subhymenium composed of cells of textura globulosa to angularis. Paraphyses 2–3.5 µm wide, numerous, branched, aseptate, filiform, slightly enlarged at the apices, sometimes paraphyses swollen and nearly moniliform with intracellular, vacuolar and cytoplasmic yellowish-brown pigments, these pigments give the hymenium a reddish-brown coloration in immature apothecia, and yellowish-brown in mature apothecia. Asci 145–215 x 9–11.5 µm, 8-spored, unitunicate, operculate, cylindric–clavate, rounded at the apex, non-amyloid. Ascospores 7.31–8.70 µm, uniseriate, aseptate, hyaline, globose, smooth, thick-walled, multi-guttulate. Asexual morph: Undetermined (Description modified from Pfister et al. 2013).
Notes: Kallistoskypha incarnata is characterized by its colour change when mature. Kallistoskypha incarnata is similar to Caloscypha fulgens in its excipular cell type and arrangement but differs by its smaller apothecia and hymenial pigmentation (Pfister et al. 2013).

Morphology of Kallistoskypha incarnata. a Habit of apothecia, b arrangement excipular cells, c cylindrical hairs, d cylindrical ascus, e septate, branched paraphyses, f–h operculate ascal apices, i globose ascospores (Redrawn from Pfister et al. 2013)
