Saprobic on soil. Sexual morph: Apothecia 3–12 x 0.4–0.7 mm, gregarious or arising singly, sessile, roundish. Receptacle disc-shaped. Disc flat or slightly concave, pale yellow to pale orangish. Excipulum composed of hyaline cells of textura intricata. Asci 150–190 x 8–12.5 µm, 8-spored, unitunicate, cylindrical,
operculate, non-amyloid. Ascospores 12–15 x 5.5–7.2 µm, uniseriate, hyaline, ellipsoid, one-celled spores.
Asexual morph: Undetermined (Description modified from Harmaja 1969b).
Notes: Karstenella vernalis is characterized by a more reduced type of apothecia (Hansen et al. 2008). Although the original description mentioned that this species had 1-septate spores, Korf (1972) recorded bi-nucleate ascospores and Hansen et al. (2008) reported it as 1- to multiseptate ascospores.
