Saprobic on soil. Sexual morph: Apothecia 3–6 cm diam. and 5–10 cm high, gregarious, stipitate, superficial on the substrate. Receptacle conical to oval shaped, pitted, with acute ridges forming an irregular network around the angular pits, pale brown. Stipe paler than the receptacle, short, swollen at the base, longitudinally furrowed. Apothecial core composed of hyaline cells of textura angularis. Paraphyses 6–10 µm wide at the apex, numerous, branched, septate, hyaline, slightly enlarge at the apices. Asci 250–300 x 15–20 µm, 8-spored, unitunicate, operculate, cylindrical, rounded at the apex, non-amyloid. Ascospores 15–20 x 10–15 µm, uniseriate, hyaline, ellipsoid, thick-walled, mature spores are multi guttulate. Asexual morph: Undetermined.

Notes: Morchella esculenta is characterized by its pitted stipitate apothecia with acute ridges forming an irregular network around the angular pits (Dennis 1981).
