Saprobic on soil. Sexual morph: Apothecia 1–2 cm diam. and 2–5 cm high, gregarious, long stipitate. Receptacle deep cupulate, external surface rough, granulated, brown when dry. Disc concave, brown when dry. Ectal excipulum composed of yellowish cells of textura angularis. Medullary excipulum composed of yellowish, cells of textura intricata. Paraphyses 3–4 µm wide, numerous, septate, filiform, slightly swollen at the apices. Asci 120–170 x 6–10 µm, 8-spored, unitunicate, cylindrical, rounded at the apex, non-amyloid. Ascospores 8–12 x 4–6 µm, uniseriate, aseptate, hyaline, fusoid to ellipsoid, narrow, guttulate, with minute, conical ornamentations on the surface. Asexual morph: Undetermined.

Notes: Sowerbyella angustispora is characterized by its long stipitate, deep cupulate apothecia and fusoid to ellipsoid, narrow ascospores with minute, conical ornamentations on the surface (Zhuang 2009).
