Tarzetta cupularis

Saprobic on soil. Sexual morph: Apothecia cupulate to ear shaped, brown when dry, dark brown when rehydrated, substipitate, exterior surface glabrous. Margins curved, concolorous to exterior surface. Disc dark brown. Ectal excipulum composed of cells of textura angularis, hyaline. Medullary excipulum composed of loosely arranged hyphae. Hymenium hyaline. Paraphyses hyaline, smooth thick-walled, septate, slightly swollen at the apices. Asci unitunicate, operculate, cylindrical, long pedicellate, non amyloid, 8-spored. Ascospores globose, aseptate, hyaline. Asexual morph: Undetermined.
Specimen examined: USA, Washington, Seattle, Pack Forest under Douglas fir, subplot 51, on washed soil, J.S. Ammirati, June 21 1989 (FLAS 55431)
Notes: Tarzetta cupularis is characterised by having cupulate apothecia, apically swollen paraphyses, cylindricclavate, non-amyloid asci and globose ascospores (Wu and Kimbrough 2001).
